Helping Others Is a Blessing — PLC Homeless Program

Today, on the third Sunday of the month, we made our regular journey to Skid Row in Los Angeles to offer support to our street friends. Under the bright sun and warm sky, what may seem like a simple act of giving became something much deeper—a moment of connection, dignity, and shared humanity.

In the teachings of the Buddha, generosity (dāna) is the first step on the path of awakening. When we give, we are not only helping others—we are softening our own hearts, loosening attachment, and cultivating compassion. Helping others is not a burden; it is a blessing. It purifies the mind and brings quiet joy that cannot be measured by material means.

Today’s offering was made possible through the kindness of many. Heartfelt thanks to Hui-Chun for generously providing toiletries, underwear, blankets, and clothing. We are grateful to Tiffany for the chocolates, and to Trang for bagels, shampoos, and soaps. Along with these, we offered croissants, muffins, bananas, and water—simple items, yet meaningful in a day of heat, bringing a moment of relief and comfort.

This work is sustained by the spirit of our volunteers. Deep appreciation to Ha, Tuyet, Trang, Sofia, Rebecca, Alex, Charley, and Hui-Chuan. Your presence, your smiles, and your compassion brought light into the lives of many today. Sometimes, the greatest gift is not what we give, but how we give—with sincerity, respect, and an open heart.

In serving others, we come to see that there is no real separation between “giver” and “receiver.” We are all walking this path together, supporting one another in visible and invisible ways. Each act of kindness plants seeds of hope, not only in others, but within ourselves.

If you feel inspired to support or join us in person, you are warmly welcome to reach out. May we continue to cultivate generosity and compassion in our daily lives.

May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering. Amitoufo 🙏😀🙏
